New Delhi: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MOPSW) celebrated the International Day of Women Seafarers in New Delhi, honoring the significant contribution of women seafarers. This year's theme, "Secure Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Security" highlights the importance of women's safety and security in the maritime sector. During the celebration, 27 women sailors from various maritime institutions achieving various heights in the maritime sector and some professionals from the field were recognized for their dedication and significant contribution to the maritime sector. These women exemplify the strength and resilience needed to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated field, and their achievements pave the way for future generations of women in the maritime sector. Secretary Shri T.K. Ramachandran said, “On this International Day for Women in the Maritime Sector, we recognize the invaluable contribution of women in the maritime sector. Their dedication and expertise is vital as we move towards a more sustainable and equitable future. We must continue to break down barriers and create opportunities for women in this industry. “Together, we can achieve a balanced, diverse and prosperous marine community.” “This year's theme, “Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety” emphasizes the significant impact that women have on maritime safety. It highlights the critical importance of safety in the industry and ensures safe “Recognizes the essential role of women in ensuring operations and protecting life at sea.” The celebration highlighted the importance of gender equality as a key pillar for a sustainable future, as recognized in Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways International Maritime Organization ( IMO is committed to supporting and empowering women at sea through various initiatives and collaborations with other industry stakeholders, with the number of seafarers increasing by 140% in the year 2014. The total number of active Indian seafarers in India was 1,17,090 which has increased to 2,80,000 in the year 2023. The Directorate General of Shipping had registered about 1,699 female seafarers in the year 2023 which has increased to 10,440 in the year 2023. Representing an increase of 514% in Indian seafarers. Presently, total women seafarers/Indo registered as on 15.05.2024 are 13,371 while active women seafarers as on 31.12.2023 are 4770.
